Quadratics

14 min read

Completing the square, the quadratic formula, the discriminant, solving quadratic equations and inequalities, and sketching parabolas.

The quadratic function

A quadratic has the form y=ax2+bx+cy = ax^2 + bx + cy=ax2+bx+c with a≠0a \neq 0a=0. Its graph is a parabola — opening upwards if a>0a > 0a>0 and downwards if a<0a < 0a<0. The curve is symmetric about a vertical line through its vertex (the turning point).
