Particle Physics

13 min read

The standard model, quarks and leptons, antimatter, particle interactions and the use of particle accelerators.

Classifying particles

  • Hadrons (feel the strong force): baryons (3 quarks, e.g. proton = uud, neutron = udd) and mesons (a quark + antiquark).
  • Leptons (fundamental, don't feel the strong force): electron, muon, and neutrinos.
  • Quarks: up, down, strange (and others), with fractional charges (u = +⅔, d = −⅓).
