Waves

14 min read

Wave properties, the wave equation, transverse and longitudinal waves, superposition and stationary waves.

A wave transfers energy without transferring matter. The key quantities are wavelength λ\lambdaλ, frequency fff, period TTT and speed vvv.

The wave equation

v=fλf=1Tv = f\lambda \qquad f = \frac{1}{T}v=fλf=T1

Worked example. A sound wave has frequency 340340340 Hz and wavelength 1.01.01.0 m. Speed v=fλ=340×1.0=340v = f\lambda = 340 \times 1.0 = 340v=fλ=340×1.0=340 m s⁻¹.
