Mensuration

14 min read

Area and perimeter, circles, arcs and sectors, surface area and volume of 3D solids, and similar-shape scale factors.

Mensuration is about length, area and volume — and knowing which formula to reach for.

Circles

  • Circumference =πd=2πr= \pi d = 2\pi r=πd=2πr.
  • Area =πr2= \pi r^2=πr2.
  • Arc length =θ360×2πr= \dfrac{\theta}{360} \times 2\pi r=360θ×2πr and sector area =θ360×πr2= \dfrac{\theta}{360} \times \pi r^2=360θ×πr2.
r r θ
A sector with radius r and angle θ — take the fraction θ/360 of the whole circle.
