Pythagoras & Trigonometry

17 min read

Pythagoras' theorem, SOHCAHTOA, the sine and cosine rules, the area rule, bearings and 3D problems.

Right-angled and non-right triangles both appear on the Higher paper, along with bearings and 3D shapes.

Pythagoras' theorem

In a right-angled triangle, a2+b2=c2a^2 + b^2 = c^2a2+b2=c2 where ccc is the hypotenuse (the longest side, opposite the right angle).

8 6 ?
Find the hypotenuse: c² = 6² + 8² = 100, so c = 10.
