Economic Development, Inequality & Policy Trade-offs

16 min read

Growth versus development, indicators including the HDI, the causes and policies for inequality and poverty, and trade-offs between policy objectives.

Growth versus development

Economic growth is a rise in real GDP. Economic development is broader — improvements in living standards and well-being: higher incomes, better health and education, reduced poverty, greater freedom and choice, and environmental sustainability. Growth can occur without development if its benefits are unevenly shared or come at environmental cost.
