Differentiation

16 min read

The derivative, the power, chain, product and quotient rules, tangents and normals, and stationary points.

The derivative

The derivative dydx\dfrac{dy}{dx}dxdy gives the gradient of the curve at each point. For powers:

ddx(xn)=nxn−1\frac{d}{dx}(x^n) = nx^{n-1}dxd(xn)=nxn−1

Differentiate term by term; constants differentiate to zero.
