Forces & Newton's Laws

16 min read

Forces, resultants and equilibrium, Newton's three laws, friction, connected particles, and momentum.

Forces and resultants

A force (newtons, N) is a vector. The resultant is the vector sum of all forces. Resolve forces into perpendicular components: a force FFF at angle θ\thetaθ to a direction has component Fcos⁡θF\cos\thetaFcosθ along it and Fsin⁡θF\sin\thetaFsinθ perpendicular to it. Weight is W=mgW = mgW=mg acting downward.
