Forces and resultants

A force (newtons, N) is a vector. The resultant is the vector sum of all forces. Resolve forces into perpendicular components: a force $F$ at angle $\theta$ to a direction has component $F\cos\theta$ along it and $F\sin\theta$ perpendicular to it. Weight is $W = mg$ acting downward.
