Superposition

15 min read

The principle of superposition, interference and coherence, the double-slit experiment, diffraction gratings, and stationary waves.

The principle of superposition

When two or more waves meet at a point, the resultant displacement is the vector sum of the individual displacements. Constructive interference occurs where waves arrive in phase (path difference =nλ= n\lambda=nλ); destructive interference where they arrive in antiphase (path difference =(n+12)λ= (n+\tfrac12)\lambda=(n+21)λ).
