A hierarchical structure: the chain of command runs down; each manager has a span of control.
  • Hierarchy: the levels of management. Chain of command: the line of authority. Span of control: how many staff report to one manager.
  • Tall structures have many levels (narrow span); flat structures have few (wide span). Delayering removes levels to cut costs and speed decisions.
