Theme 1 is the foundation of microeconomics. At A-level it is examined mainly in Paper 1 (Markets & business behaviour), combined with Theme 3. Every answer is marked against four Assessment Objectives — knowing what each rewards tells you how to write:

AOSkillHow you show it
AO1KnowledgeDefine terms accurately; state the right concept.
AO2ApplicationUse the data / context in the question — quote figures, refer to the named market.
AO3AnalysisBuild logical chains of reasoning, supported by accurate diagrams.
AO4EvaluationWeigh up both sides and reach a justified, supported judgement.

The papers (A-level, 9EC0): three exams, each 2 hours and 100 marks — Paper 1 (Themes 1 & 3, 35%), Paper 2 (Themes 2 & 4, 35%) and Paper 3 (synoptic, all themes, 30%). Questions range from short define and calculate tasks up to 25-mark essays, all built around data-response context. The command word tells you how much analysis and evaluation to give — see the full guide at the back. (Always confirm structure and weightings against the latest official specification.)
