Systems Analysis & Development

12 min read

The systems development life cycle: analysis, design, implementation, testing and maintenance.

New IT systems are built using a structured process — the systems development life cycle (SDLC).

The stages

Analysis Design Build Test Maintain
The systems development life cycle, from analysis through to maintenance.
  1. Analysis: investigate the current system and gather requirements (interviews, questionnaires, observation).
  2. Design: plan inputs, outputs, data structures, the interface and test plan.
  3. Implementation (build): create the system and convert/transfer the data.
  4. Testing: check it meets requirements (normal, boundary and erroneous data).
  5. Maintenance: fix errors and adapt the system over time.
