The endocrine system, key hormones, and a comparison of nervous and hormonal control.
The endocrine system
Hormones are chemicals made by glands and carried in the blood to target organs. Key examples:
- Insulin/glucagon (pancreas) — blood glucose.
- Adrenaline (adrenal glands) — "fight or flight": raises heart rate and blood glucose.
- Oestrogen/testosterone — sexual development and reproduction.
- ADH (pituitary) — water balance.
