DNA, genes and chromosomes
A gene is a length of DNA coding for a protein, carried on chromosomes (humans have 23 pairs). DNA is a double helix of two strands held by paired bases (A–T, C–G). An allele is a version of a gene; dominant alleles show in the heterozygote, recessive only when homozygous.
