Ratio, Proportion & Rates of Change

14 min read

Sharing in a ratio, direct and inverse proportion, compound measures (speed, density, pressure) and best-value problems.

Ratio compares quantities; proportion relates how they change together.

Working with ratio

  • Simplify ratios by dividing by the HCF.
  • Share in a ratio: add the parts to find the number of shares, divide the total by the number of shares to find one part, then multiply.
  • Convert a ratio to a fraction of the total or to the form 1:n1:n1:n when comparing.
