Stoichiometry & the Mole

16 min read

Formulae, balancing equations, relative masses, the mole, concentration, and percentage yield and purity.

Formulae and equations

A chemical formula shows the number of atoms of each element. Equations must be balanced — the same number of each atom on both sides. State symbols: (s) solid, (l) liquid, (g) gas, (aq) aqueous.

Example: 2H2(g)+O2(g)→2H2O(l)2H_2(g) + O_2(g) \rightarrow 2H_2O(l)2H2(g)+O2(g)→2H2O(l).
