Cells as the basic unit

All living organisms are made of cells. Eukaryotic cells (animals, plants, fungi, protoctists) have a true membrane-bound nucleus and membrane-bound organelles. Prokaryotic cells (bacteria) are smaller, lack a nucleus and lack membrane-bound organelles.
