The Periodic Table: Chemical Periodicity (Period 3)

16 min read

Periodic trends in atomic radius, ionisation energy, melting point and electrical conductivity across Period 3, and reactions of the elements, oxides and chlorides.

Trends across Period 3 (Na → Ar)

Atomic radius decreases — increasing nuclear charge, same shielding, electrons pulled in.
First ionisation energy generally increases (with dips at Al and S, as in Chapter 1).
Electrical conductivity: high for metals (Na, Mg, Al — more delocalised electrons), peaks at Al, then giant covalent Si (semiconductor), and zero for the molecular/atomic non-metals.
