Nitrogen & Sulfur

14 min read

Nitrogen's inertness, ammonia and the Haber process, ammonium salts and nitrogen oxides in the environment, and sulfur, sulfur dioxide and the Contact process.

Nitrogen

N2\text{N}_2N2 is very unreactive because of the strong triple bond (N≡N\text{N}{\equiv}\text{N}N≡N, bond energy 945 kJ mol−1945\,\text{kJ mol}^{-1}945kJ mol−1) and its non-polarity. This is why ammonia synthesis needs high temperature, pressure and a catalyst.
