LANs and WANs
A LAN (Local Area Network) covers a small geographic area (a building or site), is usually owned by one organisation, and uses high-speed connections.
A WAN (Wide Area Network) covers a large area (between cities or countries) using third-party infrastructure; the internet is the largest WAN.
Networks let users share hardware (printers), share data and software, communicate and centralise security and backups.
