Averages from lists and frequency tables, estimated mean for grouped data, cumulative frequency, box plots and histograms.

Averages and range

  • Mean = total ÷ number of values; median = middle value (order first); mode = most common; range = highest − lowest.
  • From a frequency table, mean =∑fx∑f=\dfrac{\sum fx}{\sum f}=∑f∑fx.
  • For grouped data, use the midpoint of each class to get an estimated mean (you cannot find the exact mean — the original values are lost).
