Energy Resources & Transfer

13 min read

Energy stores and transfers, work, power and efficiency, and methods of heat transfer.

Energy is conserved — it is transferred between stores, never created or destroyed.

Energy stores and transfers

Stores include kinetic, gravitational, elastic, thermal, chemical and nuclear. Energy transfers mechanically, electrically, by heating or by radiation.

Ek=12mv2ΔGPE=mghE_k = \tfrac12 mv^2 \qquad \Delta GPE = mghEk=21mv2ΔGPE=mgh

Worked example. A 222 kg ball at 666 m s⁻¹ has Ek=12(2)(62)=36E_k = \tfrac12 (2)(6^2) = 36Ek=21(2)(62)=36
