Waves

13 min read

Wave properties, the wave equation, the electromagnetic spectrum, and reflection and refraction.

Waves transfer energy without transferring matter.

Wave properties

  • Transverse waves vibrate perpendicular to travel (light, water); longitudinal parallel (sound).
  • Key quantities: wavelength λ\lambdaλ, frequency fff, amplitude, period TTT.

v=fλT=1fv = f\lambda \qquad T = \frac{1}{f}v=fλT=f1

Worked example. A wave of frequency 505050 Hz and wavelength 444 m has speed v=fλ=50×4=200v = f\lambda = 50 \times 4 = 200v=fλ=50×4=200 m s⁻¹.
