Formulae, Equations & Chemical Calculations

13 min read

Relative formula mass, the mole, empirical formulae, percentage yield, concentration and balancing equations.

Relative masses

Relative atomic mass (Aᵣ) is the mass of an atom relative to carbon-12. Relative formula mass (Mᵣ) = sum of the Aᵣ of every atom in the formula. E.g. Mᵣ(H₂O) = (2×1) + 16 = 18; Mᵣ(CaCO₃) = 40 + 12 + (3×16) = 100.
