Groups of the Periodic Table

Group 1 alkali metals, Group 7 halogens, Group 0 noble gases and the transition metals.

Group 1 — the alkali metals

Li, Na, K... have 1 outer electron; soft, low density, very reactive. They react with water → metal hydroxide + hydrogen (an alkali). Reactivity increases down the group (the outer electron is further out, more easily lost).
