Chemical Energetics

12 min read

Exothermic and endothermic reactions, energy level diagrams, activation energy and bond energy calculations.

Exothermic and endothermic reactions

Exothermic reactions release energy (usually heat) to the surroundings, so the temperature rises. Examples: combustion, neutralisation, respiration.
Endothermic reactions take in energy from the surroundings, so the temperature falls. Examples: thermal decomposition, photosynthesis, dissolving some salts.
