Chemistry of the Environment

13 min read

Air quality and pollutants, the greenhouse effect, water treatment and testing, and fertilisers.

Air and its pollutants

Clean dry air is about 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, ~1% argon and a small amount of carbon dioxide (and other gases).

PollutantSourceHarmful effect
Carbon monoxide (CO)incomplete combustion of fuelstoxic — binds to haemoglobin
Sulfur dioxide (SO2SO_2SO2)burning fossil fuels containing sulfuracid rain, respiratory problems
Oxides of nitrogen (NOxNO_xNOx)high-temperature combustion in enginesacid rain, photochemical smog
Particulatesdiesel enginesrespiratory problems

Catalytic converters in cars reduce pollution, e.g. 2CO+2NO→N2+2CO22CO + 2NO \rightarrow N_2 + 2CO_22CO+2NO→N2+2CO2.
