Equations & Inequalities

13 min read

Solving linear equations, simultaneous equations by elimination and substitution, and linear inequalities including number lines.

Linear equations

Do the same operation to both sides to isolate the unknown. For brackets, expand first; for fractions, multiply through by the denominator.

3x−12=7  ⇒  3x−1=14  ⇒  3x=15  ⇒  x=5\frac{3x - 1}{2} = 7 \;\Rightarrow\; 3x - 1 = 14 \;\Rightarrow\; 3x = 15 \;\Rightarrow\; x = 523x−1=7⇒3x−1=14⇒3x=15⇒x=5
