Similarity & Congruence

13 min read

Congruent triangle conditions, similar shapes and the scale factor, and the area and volume scale factors for similar solids.

Congruence

Two shapes are congruent if they are exactly the same shape and size (one can be mapped onto the other by reflection, rotation or translation). For triangles, prove congruence with one of these conditions:

    SSS — three sides equal.
SAS — two sides and the included angle equal.
ASA (or AAS) — two angles and a corresponding side equal.
RHS — right angle, hypotenuse and one other side equal.
SSS SAS ASA RHS
The four congruence conditions for triangles — matching the marked equal sides/angles guarantees congruence.
