SI units and prefixes
Every physical quantity is a number multiplied by a unit. Physics uses the SI system of base units:
| Quantity | SI unit | Symbol |
|---|---|---|
| length | metre | m |
| mass | kilogram | kg |
| time | second | s |
| electric current | ampere | A |
| temperature | kelvin | K |
Other units are derived from these (e.g. speed in , force in ). Common prefixes scale a unit:
| Prefix | Symbol | Multiplier |
|---|---|---|
| nano | n | |
| micro | µ | |
| milli | m |
