Thermal Energy Transfer

12 min read

Conduction, convection and radiation, the factors affecting each, and applications in everyday life.

Conduction

Conduction is the transfer of thermal energy through a material without the material moving. Particles at the hot end vibrate more and pass energy to neighbouring particles by collisions; in metals, free electrons carry energy quickly, making metals excellent conductors. Non-metals, liquids and gases are poor conductors (good insulators).
