Biodiversity, Classification & Genetic Technology

17 min read

Classification and the three domains, biodiversity and sampling, conservation, and the tools of genetic technology.

Classification

Organisms are classified in a hierarchy: domain → kingdom → phylum → class → order → family → genus → species. The three-domain system (Woese) recognises Bacteria, Archaea and Eukarya, based on rRNA sequences; Archaea and Eukarya are more closely related to each other than to Bacteria. The binomial system names each species by genus + species (e.g. Panthera leo).
