ATP and the need for respiration

ATP is the universal energy currency: hydrolysis of ATP to ADP + Pi releases ~30.5 kJ/mol for cellular work. It is small, soluble, and releases energy in usable amounts. Respiration transfers energy from organic molecules to ATP.
