Cell Structure & Membranes

14 min read

Eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells, the main organelles, the fluid-mosaic membrane, and transport across membranes.

Cells are the basic unit of life. Their organelles and membranes control what enters and leaves.

Organelles

  • Nucleus — contains DNA; controls the cell.
  • Mitochondria — site of aerobic respiration (ATP).
  • Ribosomes — protein synthesis.
  • Rough ER — transports proteins; smooth ER — makes lipids.
  • Golgi apparatus — modifies and packages proteins.
  • Chloroplasts (plants) — photosynthesis.

Prokaryotes (bacteria) are smaller, have no nucleus or membrane-bound organelles, and have a cell wall of peptidoglycan.
