Energetics

13 min read

Exothermic and endothermic changes, enthalpy changes, calorimetry, Hess's law and bond enthalpies.

Energetics is about the heat taken in or given out during reactions.

Enthalpy change

ΔH\Delta HΔH is the heat change at constant pressure. Exothermic reactions release heat (ΔH\Delta HΔH negative); endothermic absorb it (ΔH\Delta HΔH positive).

progress of reaction energy reactants products Eₐ ΔH
An exothermic reaction profile: products are lower than reactants (ΔH negative), with activation energy Eₐ.
