Rate Equations & Reaction Mechanisms

15 min read

Orders of reaction, the rate equation and rate constant, finding orders from data, and the rate-determining step.

The rate equation

rate=k[A]m[B]n\text{rate} = k[A]^m[B]^nrate=k[A]m[B]n mmm and nnn are the orders with respect to A and B (found experimentally, not from the equation); the overall order is m+nm+nm+n. kkk is the rate constant (increases with temperature).
