Nomenclature, formulae, isomerism, and the chemistry of alkanes including combustion and free-radical substitution.
Organic essentials
- Homologous series: a family with the same general formula and similar properties (e.g. alkanes ).
- Functional group: the reactive part that defines the series.
- Nomenclature: stem (meth, eth, prop, but…) + suffix (-ane, -ene, -ol…). Number the chain to give substituents the lowest locants.
- Formulae: empirical, molecular, structural, displayed and skeletal.
