Organic Chemistry: Basics & Alkanes

15 min read

Nomenclature, formulae, isomerism, and the chemistry of alkanes including combustion and free-radical substitution.

Organic essentials

  • Homologous series: a family with the same general formula and similar properties (e.g. alkanes CnH2n+2C_nH_{2n+2}CnH2n+2).
  • Functional group: the reactive part that defines the series.
  • Nomenclature: stem (meth, eth, prop, but…) + suffix (-ane, -ene, -ol…). Number the chain to give substituents the lowest locants.
  • Formulae: empirical, molecular, structural, displayed and skeletal.
