Redox & Group Chemistry

16 min read

Oxidation numbers, half-equations, redox reactions, and the trends and reactions of Group 2 and Group 7.

Redox and oxidation numbers

Oxidation is loss of electrons (OIL); reduction is gain (RIG). Track using oxidation numbers: elements 0; simple ions = charge; O usually −2; H usually +1; the sum equals the overall charge. An increase in oxidation number = oxidation; a decrease = reduction. An oxidising agent is itself reduced; a reducing agent is itself oxidised.

Write half-equations and combine so electrons cancel.
