Reactivity Series & Electrolysis

14 min read

The reactivity series, displacement reactions, and electrolysis of molten and aqueous compounds.

The reactivity series ranks metals; electrolysis uses electricity to split compounds.

The reactivity series

From most to least reactive: potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, aluminium, (carbon), zinc, iron, (hydrogen), copper, silver, gold. A more reactive metal displaces a less reactive one from its compound.

Worked example. Zn+CuSO4→ZnSO4+Cu\text{Zn} + \text{CuSO}_4 \rightarrow \text{ZnSO}_4 + \text{Cu}Zn+CuSO4→ZnSO4+Cu — zinc displaces copper.
