Biotechnology & Genetic Modification

13 min read

Using microorganisms and enzymes in industry, fermentation and biofuels, and genetic modification including insulin production and GM crops.

Why microorganisms are used

Bacteria and fungi (e.g. yeast) are useful in biotechnology because they reproduce rapidly, have few ethical concerns, can grow on a range of inexpensive substrates (including waste), and their plasmids/genetics can be altered easily for genetic modification.
