Plant Nutrition & Photosynthesis

14 min read

Photosynthesis, the leaf, limiting factors, and mineral requirements.

Photosynthesis

Photosynthesis is the process by which plants make carbohydrates from raw materials using energy from light.

6CO2+6H2O→C6H12O6+6O26CO_2 + 6H_2O \rightarrow C_6H_{12}O_6 + 6O_26CO2+6H2O→C6H12O6+6O2

(carbon dioxide + water → glucose + oxygen, in the presence of light and chlorophyll). Chlorophyll, in the chloroplasts, absorbs light energy and transfers it to chemical energy in glucose. Glucose is used in respiration, converted to starch for storage, to cellulose for walls, to sucrose for transport, and (with nitrogen) to amino acids.
