Transport in Plants

13 min read

Xylem and phloem, water uptake, transpiration and translocation.

Xylem and phloem

Xylem carries water and mineral ions from roots to leaves. Xylem vessels are dead, hollow tubes with no end walls, strengthened with lignin. Transport is one way (up).
Phloem carries sucrose and amino acids (made in the leaves) to all parts — translocation. Phloem is living and transport is two-way (up or down to growing or storage regions).
