Manual and direct data-entry input devices, sensors, output devices including monitors, printers and actuators, and choosing the right device.

Input devices

An input device sends data into the computer.

    Manual input (the user enters data): keyboard, numeric keypad, pointing devices (mouse, touchpad, trackerball), remote control, joystick/driving wheel, touchscreen, scanner, digital camera, microphone, graphics tablet, webcam, light pen.
    Direct data entry (data read automatically, fewer errors): magnetic stripe reader, chip and PIN reader, RFID reader, OMR (Optical Mark Recognition — reads marks/shaded boxes, e.g. multiple-choice answer sheets), OCR (Optical Character Recognition — reads printed/handwritten characters into editable text), barcode reader, QR scanner, MICR (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition — reads the numbers on bank cheques).
