Security threats
Malware — malicious software, including viruses (replicate and damage files/programs), worms (self-spreading over networks), trojan horses (disguised as useful software), spyware/key-loggers (record keystrokes to steal data) and ransomware (encrypts files and demands payment).
Hacking — gaining unauthorised access to a computer system, often to steal or alter data.
Phishing — fake emails/messages pretending to be from a trusted source to trick the user into giving personal details.
Pharming — malicious code redirects a user from a genuine website to a fake one to steal data.
Smishing/Vishing — phishing carried out by SMS text or by voice call.
Spam — unwanted (junk) email.
Data interception — capturing data as it travels across a network (e.g. on unsecured Wi-Fi).
