Organic Chemistry — Hydrocarbons

14 min read

Nomenclature and isomerism, alkanes and combustion, free-radical substitution, and alkenes with addition reactions.

Organic chemistry is the chemistry of carbon compounds. Hydrocarbons contain only carbon and hydrogen.

Nomenclature and isomerism

Carbon-chain prefixes: meth (1), eth (2), prop (3), but (4), pent (5). Structural isomers have the same molecular formula but different structures (e.g. butane and methylpropane, both C4H10\text{C}_4\text{H}_{10}C4H10).
