Electrolysis uses electricity to break down an ionic compound (molten or in solution). Ions move to the electrodes: cations to the cathode (−), anions to the anode (+).
Molten ionic compounds
The metal forms at the cathode; the non-metal at the anode. E.g. molten lead bromide → lead (cathode) + bromine (anode).
